Creating a handmade Valentine's Day card can be a rewarding way to express your feelings. This first card of the season, I designed a card inspired by Freshly Made Sketch #637, combining patterned papers and elegant stamping techniques. Using supplies from my paper stash and the Taylored Expressions Hearts A Plenty background stamp set, I crafted a card that balances charm and simplicity. If you enjoy paper crafting or want to try a fresh approach to Valentine’s Day cards, this step-by-step guide will inspire you to create your own unique design.

Gathering Materials and Choosing Patterns
The first step in any card-making project is selecting your materials. For this design, I looked through my paper stash to find two complementary patterned papers:
A heart-themed paper with small, cute hearts scattered across a soft background.
A pink striped pattern that adds subtle contrast without overpowering the hearts.
These two patterns create a lively yet balanced background for the card. To add a touch of elegance, I used pink mirror cardstock for the focal elements with a white layer on top. This cardstock has a shiny finish that catches the light beautifully, making the card feel special.
Using Freshly Made Sketch 637 for Layout Inspiration
Freshly Made Sketch #637 provides a clean and modern layout that works well for Valentine’s Day cards. The sketch features a grid of squares or rectangles arranged neatly, which inspired me to cut 1.5-inch squares from the pink mirror cardstock. I rounded the corners of these squares using a corner punch to soften the edges and add a polished look.
This grid layout allows for a structured design while giving room to showcase different elements like stamped hearts and sentiments. The repetition of squares creates rhythm and draws the eye across the card.
Stamping with Taylored Expressions Hearts A Plenty
The Taylored Expressions Hearts A Plenty background stamp is a versatile tool for Valentine’s Day projects. It includes a coordinating stamp and die set, which makes it easy to add detailed hearts and sentiments.
For this card, I created two heart backgrounds on pink cardstock, one using Catherine Pooler's Rockin' Red and other with Party Dress inks, then cut them out using the coordinating dies. The sentiments are simple but heartfelt, perfect for Valentine’s Day messages.
Assembling the Card
Once all the pieces were ready, I arranged the pink mirror cardstock squares on the patterned background, spacing them evenly. I adhered the white layer (1 3/8" squares with rounded corners), the stamped hearts on top of each square, layering them to create depth.
Using foam tape under each squre added dimension, making the card more tactile and engaging. The combination of shiny cardstock, patterned paper, and stamped images creates a balanced and eye-catching design.
Tips for Personalizing Your Card
Color Choices: Feel free to swap the pink mirror cardstock for other colors like red, gold, or silver to match your style.
Sentiments: Customize the stamped sentiments with your own messages or use different fonts for variety.
Additional Embellishments: Add sequins, enamel dots, or glitter for extra sparkle.
Size Variations: Try different square sizes or shapes like circles or hexagons for a unique twist.
Why Handmade Cards Matter
Handmade cards show thoughtfulness and effort that store-bought cards often lack. They allow you to tailor your message and design to the recipient’s tastes. Using sketches helps simplify the design process, making it easier to create something beautiful without feeling overwhelmed.
